Armadillo Buckle Series

1MO's 3D archery tournament series for Central Texas. Shoots run close to ASA rules, move between venues across Bell County, and are open to anyone who registers.

What a shoot looks like

You check in early, join a small group and walk a course of life-size 3D animal targets, shooting each one from the stake the way a shot plays out on a hunt.

Past shoots kicked off at 7 a.m. and wrapped up around noon. Traditional bows shoot the course first, and the rest of the field follows. Several classes shoot every event, so you're scored against people shooting the same kind of setup.

The series travels. Shoots have been held on our Armadillo Bow Course, at the BLORA range on Belton Lake, at Winkler Park in Belton and at Salado College Park.

It started as the Armadillo Bowhunter Shoot, and it still shoots like a hunt: real-size animals, one arrow each, set at different distances.

How it compares to ASA

The Archery Shooters Association (ASA) sets the 3D rules most Texas shooters know from the state qualifiers, including the Texas ASA qualifiers we've hosted. Armadillo shoots run close to those rules, so what you practice here carries straight over. If you've never shot an ASA event, this is the format.

ASA ruleHow it works
One arrow per targetEvery shooter gets one shot from their stake, then the group walks to the next animal.
Scoring ringsAn arrow scores 12, 10, 8 or 5 depending on where it lands. A miss is zero. The lower 12 is in play unless you call the upper 12 before you shoot. A 14 ring is used only at special events.
Known or unknown distanceKnown classes may use rangefinders. Unknown classes judge distance by eye, and binoculars are allowed.
Maximum distanceSet by class: 50 yards for Pro and Semi-Pro, then 45, 40 and 30-yard classes, 25 for youth recurve, 20 for Eagle and 15 for Junior Eagle.
GroupsAt least three shooters per group. You touch your stake when you shoot.
TimeOne minute per target in known classes, two minutes in unknown.
RoundA national ASA tournament is two rounds of 20 targets.

Why shoot it

Tournament reps close to home.

Judging yardage on a 3D animal, picking a spot and making one arrow count with a group watching is a skill you only build by doing it. The series gives Bell County archers a shoot every month or so during the season, without a long drive to the next tour stop.

Bowhunters get the same thing in a different package: a morning of shots at real-size animals before the season opens.

Seasons

The fall 2025 season ran September through a December finale on the Armadillo course. The spring and summer 2026 season ran from February through a double shoot at Salado College Park in July.
